Episode 1: Weaponized Concern

In this episode, our host, Kimberlé Crenshaw, refutes the myth that anti-CRT campaigns targeting schools seek to restore “parental choice” over what kids are exposed to. Instead, we demonstrate how attacks on CRT are being used to stoke race-based divisions that cause parents of white children to abandon the public education system altogether. We further trace the history of regressive movements sparked by concerned parent groups throughout American history by linking the efforts made by the Mom’s For Liberty movement to the Daughters of the Confederacy.  This episode features Karen Cox, professor of History at UNC-Charlotte, and David Yacovone, historian, author of Teaching White Supremacy, and lifetime associate at Harvard University’s Hutchin’s Centre for African and African American Research. Additional dialogue from Traci Thompson Bryant and Sarah Stevens both parents of students in Berkeley County.
